My first forays into makeup were as a teenager with a Collection 2000 beige concealer, Rimmel Coffee Shimmer lipstick and Carroll shimmery blue eyeshadow. Yes. I did look as amazing as you are imagining. It wasn't until I found MAC that I discovered there were products actually made with brown skin in mind and while I have long thrown away that first NC45 concealer (was every MAC artist trained to give every Indian girl NC45?), I am still grateful.

I do think that MAC has been over taken by newer brands coming out with better shades of base products with a wider range of undertones. I myself still encounter shade problems with them but I continue to be appreciative because MAC make a corrector, concealer, foundation and powder suitable for my very dry skin. Here is a run down of my favourite MAC products to create a base with shade and application tips.

Studio Conceal & Correct Duo

I use peach and orange-based correctors for my dark circles and pigmentation. As the first makeup product I put on, I need corrector to blend out really well and feel comfortable because it may have two other products going on top. This is why this liquid corrector is best I've found so far. It offers some hydration and is really blendable. I use it with a Small Primark Oval Brush to evenly blend and get the most coverage out of the product. And if you have my skintone, Burnt Coral is the BEST corrector shade and urge MAC to make it a full size product on its own.

Select Moisturecover

This is a very comfortable concealer that gives sheer to medium coverage. It is creamy yet feels light and soft on the skin. It comes with a doefoot applicator to apply straight to skin and it blends so seamlessly that I can use this alone without foundation when I just want a simple out-the-door look. While it is a friend to dry skin by being hydrating, it is not necessarily a friend to dark skin as the shade range is limited in my opinion. I use NW35 as a brightenging concealer under eyes and on the centre of the face but would love to have this in my natural colour to use all over or how about as a foundation? It really is a must for dry/dehydrated skin.

Studio Finish Spf 35 Concealer

An emollient product that is comfortable on the skin. While I tend to find liquid products better for dry skin, this creamy concealer works well for me by dabbing it on with a sponge (I use a Mini Beauty Blender) and you get opaque coverage that looks smooth and wears well. Many say it is akin to MAC FULL COVERAGE and it's great for covering redness and pigmentation. Despite 23 shades, I haven't found my exact match. I use NW40 for the centre of my face as a near-natural shade and because I have the STUDIO CONCEAL AND CORRECT PALETTE in Dark I can mix lighter or darker.

Studio Face & Body Foundation

An ingenious product. It is another emollient one, that does not dry my skin out and feels comfortable, which is quite a feat. It is sheer in coverage but you can definitely layer this one. You can use a brush but if you rub the foundation between your fingers it will turn into a cream that I then pat onto my skin (like when you whip double cream, it will suddenly change consistency). If you have seen the video of Mary Greenwell slapping a model's face with this, it's the same principle of working the product - but less violent. I also use this to cover leg scars by applying directly onto the skin and rubbing it in. It is hard to find a moisturising foundation that doesn't just slide off and is buildable, this really is an amazing product. It comes in a squeezy nozzle bottle that, quite frankly, all foundations should come in. The only issue is with shades as there are 12 to choose from and I believe it is designed to be mixed to customize to your shade but that makes it more expensive and doesn't mean you will be able to create a shade deep enough (there is a white version but not a deep dark brown one). I use C6 which could be too light in the summer but I can deepen it with my Nip + Fab Foundation Dark Mixer.

Mineralize Skinfinish Natural

Like Face and Body, I think MAC were ahead of the curve on this one. I use the shade Medium Plus as my under-eye setting powder as it sits so nicely on the skin with a satin finish. I have never found it to make my skin look powdery or flat despite how very dry my skin is; it is a smooth powder that provides a little brightness. I also use it to give my face some dimension and warmth with the shade Medium Deep using a Real Techniques Multi Task Brush (from the Travel Essentials set).
